Former Yugoslavia: Infrastructure networks and prospects for international collaboration

The study was at first aimed to tackle the legislative framework in the former Yugoslavia countries (Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and FR Yugoslavia) in which operate the building enterprises, with particular regard to public procurements, concessions and foreign investments laws. This part has been realised in cooperation with Impregilo, one of the most important construction enterprises. Impregilo has also prepared a description of the building system in former Yugoslavia. The analysis followed with a brief
update of the regional macroeconomic framework, and a study of the state of West Balkans transport infrastructure – by country, with a focus on the necessary interventions to implement road and rail networks, and the potential economic fall-out of infrastructure projects. A brief prospect of the state of energy infrastructure was also given. Another part of the study dealt with the main directrice accesses to former Yugoslavia, and specifically the infrastructure of priority Italian interest (Corridor 5 and branch C, the Trieste-Rijeka motorway, Corridor 8, the Bar-Beograd rail line) and the opportunity of intervention.

The work is composed by the following parts:

  1. Legislative framework and potential of enterprises of infrastructure sector in former Yugoslavia countries;
  2. Economic aspects, transport and energy infrastructure framework;
  3. EU and access to former Yugoslavia.

The study was published in 2002 by Franco Angeli.
