The “Thematic Workshop on the EUSAIR Energy Master Plan for the Adriatic-Ionian Region: Perspectives, Priorities, and Developments” was held in Trieste on November 27, 2025, alongside the 22nd meeting of the Thematic Steering Group Energy (TSG2).
The event, organized under Pillar 2 – Connecting the Region, with the support of the EUSAIR Facility Point (PP6) of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, focused on cross-border cooperation, renewable energy development, energy efficiency, and innovation, paving the way toward an integrated and low-emission regional energy market in the Adriatic-Ionian Region.
The workshop discussed the Energy Master Plan, a strategic document aimed at guiding the macro-region toward decarbonization goals by 2050. Speakers highlighted the need to strengthen cross-border cooperation, considering differences in national energy policies and the rapidly changing geopolitical context. The long-term nature of energy investments and the risk of unused infrastructure were also emphasized, reaffirming the importance of coordinated regional planning.
The main priorities of the Master Plan include:
Speakers stressed the role of cross-border cooperation in strengthening supply security, increasing competitiveness, addressing rising energy prices, ensuring accessibility, and enhancing system flexibility. Special attention was given to the contribution of advanced technologies, including digitalization and artificial intelligence, considered key tools for optimizing efficiency and managing energy systems.
The closing session presented ongoing strategic projects in the macro-region, with a particular focus on infrastructures supporting diversification and regional integration. Discussions confirmed that cooperation, knowledge sharing, and continuous dialogue – including through future thematic workshops – are essential to tackle common challenges and achieve the long-term energy goals of the Adriatic-Ionian Region.

The European Union Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region (EUSAIR) addresses shared challenges and opportunities among ten countries. Supported by the Interreg IPA ADRION Programme, the project enhances governance, implements the Strategy and Action Plan, fosters coordination, improves visibility, and builds capacities for data-driven decision-making, while effectively monitoring and evaluating progress throughout the region.
