EURADRIA, a good practice for cross-border cooperation: the experience also looks to Austria

The model developed on the Italy-Slovenia border highlighted on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Friuli Venezia Giulia-Carinthia Interregional Trade Union Council

The experience gained through EURADRIA in cross-border cooperation between Italy and Slovenia is becoming a reference point also in discussions on the labour market between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Carinthia.

The topic emerged in Tarvisio during the 30th anniversary of the Friuli Venezia Giulia-Carinthia Interregional Trade Union Council, which brings together the main trade union organisations of Friuli Venezia Giulia, CGIL, CISL and UIL, and the Austrian Trade Union Federation ÖGB. The meeting focused on the main challenges currently affecting cross-border work between the two territories, from mobility and work-life balance to the management of remote work between Italy and Austria.

In this context, attention was also given to the experience of EURADRIA, the cross-border partnership developed between Italy and Slovenia. Coordinated by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the project brings together public bodies, employment services, the EURES network, employers’ associations, trade unions and other local stakeholders, with the aim of facilitating worker mobility and helping to remove the obstacles that still characterise cross-border work.

CISL FVG, a EURADRIA partner, is also engaged in the activities of the Interregional Trade Union Councils dealing with issues related to cross-border labour markets. The activities of the FVG-Carinthia Interregional Trade Union Council now also aim to establish an observatory on the cross-border labour market between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Carinthia, following the path already undertaken by EURADRIA on the Italian-Slovenian border.

This development enhances the experience built up by EURADRIA over the years and the possibility of making approaches and tools tested in cooperation between Italy and Slovenia available to other border territories, progressively strengthening labour market integration in cross-border areas.

For the 2026-2028 cycle, EURADRIA is once again coordinated by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, with the support of INFORMEST as an affiliated entity. Through the network of Infodesks operating in the territories involved, partners provide information and assistance services to workers, jobseekers and businesses, while also contributing to the collection and analysis of labour market data in support of the Cross-Border Observatory.
