AQUILEIA-SIRMIUM: PRESERVATION AND PROMOTION OF THE ARCHEOLOGICAL HERITAGE

15 July 2013

A technical delegation of the Institute for the preservation of the cultural heritage of the archeological site in Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica – Vojvodina, Serbia) was hosted, in the last days, by the Foundation Aquileia, in the frame of the Action “Sirmium – city of emperors” for the decentralized cooperation Programme EUROSTART, co-financed by Friuli Venezia Giulia Region – ex L.R. 19/2000 – and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.

During the study visit, organized by Foundation Aquileia, the architects Adrijana Škoric and Ivan Filipovic and the archeologists Biljana Lucic and Radoslav Muždeka participated to the workshop in Campoformido, held by Luisa Fogar, Daniela Cisilino and Caterina Olivieri, about the restore of the stone and other materials coming from archeological sites. Moreover they visited the laboratories of ARECON. In Aquileia, Professor Bonetto of the University of Padova, ran a workshop about the system of management of archeological sites, providing a compared analysis of different experiences in the management approaches implemented in Italy.

Afterwards the delegation visited the archeological site in Aquileia, accompanied by the archeologist Tiussi.

Furthermore, in Aquileia, Marco Santi and Elena Marincola, of the Mosaic Group Ravenna, ran a workshop about the renovation of the mosaic. The participants had the opportunity to observe the restorers during the last touches of the majestic mosaic Buon Pastore, presented in first preview in Palazzo Meizlik on the occasion of the art exhibition “Costantino and Teodoro. Aquileia in the IV century”, inaugurated on the 5th of July, that will be open until the 3rd of November. The final phase of the study visit in Friuli Venezia Giulia was the city of Pordenone for a workshop about the renovation of the fresco, managed by Renato Portolan of the Restore Center.

The objective of the Programme EUROSTART is the strengthening of the cooperation, already existing, between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Vojvodina, and the access to pre-accession funds of the European Union as well as national and international funds for a local and joint development.

For the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, the promotion of the territory, as the valorization of the cultural tourism, is linked also to the Roman archeological site of Aquileia and Sirmium, the City of emperors (current Sremska Mitrovica), identified as the pilot places for starting a course of revival, promotion and preservation of the artistic-cultural heritage of the two territories.
